You’re going to have a hard time finding anyone talking about Crushed Out without mentioning The White Stripes. Maybe it’s the stripped-down instrumentals—composed of just a drum set and an electric guitar. It could also be that Frank Hoier, the vocals/guitar half of this Brooklyn husband-and-wife rock duo, sounds eerily similar to a certain Mr. White. Maybe it’s the strong undercurrent of Delta Blues that runs through every track.
Whatever it is, don’t let it distract you:
This eminently listenable release is worth looking at without the shadow of one of our generation’s premier musicians hanging over it.
Every track on this album stands out, even the one that ripped its lyrics wholesale from a can of WD-40, but particularly notable is “Black & Purple,” a retro, sing-song ballad about Frank’s mother being chewed for listening to Black Sabbath too loud when she was a teenager.
Want to Give is one of those rare albums that’s perfectly at home as the soundtrack to relaxing after dark with good drinks and good company, the impetus for a sing-along on a road trip, or something to throw on after a long day.
